Harrison Joins Chapman

Initial reaction. Great for Chapman. Bad for Whittier. In other words, good for the MCLA, bad for the NCAA.

Why?

Because, he is the first brand name player of his era that has entered the coaching ranks.

To us that means he has decided to give back in a greater capacity than four day camps or outrageously priced private lessons.

Took a step back and thought, “well, Chapman probably offered more money than Whittier could if they even wanted him around.”

Makes sense. Whittier has to raise money for airfare for almost every game. They likely have limited funds to bring in a celebrity assistant coach.

Then we got really cynical and thought, “dear God, if Harrison tries to teach those kids how to shoot on the run the program is doomed.”

Then we read the interview over at LAS and things became clear.

He isn’t a full time coach. It’s part time because he’s busy with Nike and STX which means he’ll be with those companies on the weekend promoting at college games and Chapman during the week.

Having a great D1 player around can only help your club team right? That’s assuming he knows how to coach.

This comment was made by “SELC  y’all” on LAS, who seems to be concerned with the attention the hire is receiving:

Interesting that this is seen as a big deal. If he’s only going to be there part time, and just at practices, will he really make a big impact? It sounds like he’s been with the team pretty regularly for the past year or two. How is this different? Is he even a good coach? There’s a lot more to coaching than being a good player.

As he said himself, he’s been pretty busy with all of his other commitments. How much time has he spent learning to be a coach? It’s not like Chapman’s offense was struggling. They may be the best offense in the MCLA.

If he joined an NCAA staff out east, even if it was a team that is not as good as Chapman, it wouldn’t be big news at all. But you would assume those teams would only take him if he could commit the time to be an every-day coach.

Very exciting points. Let’s break them down.

Beyond summer camps which are a purely a money maker, he’s never coached a team at the high school or college level.

His lacrosse IQ while likely at the D1 level isn’t that high because he relied on his athletic ability.

Thus, SELC y’all is justified in questions about Harrison’s ability as a coach. With the exception of Petro and Caravana off the top of our heads, the best coaches in the land weren’t necessarily great players. The old adage being, just because you were a great player doesn’t mean you’ll be a great coach.

Having said that this is great for the MCLA and for Chapman.

It suggests that even though its only a part time role for Harrison, he deems Chapman worthy of his time. More broadly, an MCLA team has become an acceptable coaching stop for a high profile lacrosse person.

Of course Harrison hasn’t been in LA that long, but if he was, we don’t see this move happening a few years ago which is a credit to Chapman and the work Coach Wood has done.

Sean Buzzard has been named the head coach and will be assisted by Sean O’Brien and Ryan Trude. Buzzard become involved with lacrosse during his Active duty Air Force career, playing on Republic of Panama military/government squad with academy grads and embassy personnel who had played at Gettysburg, UVA, etc. He began coaching after he transitioned back to Pittsburgh and became a full time member of the PA Air National Guard. He progressed from youth coach, to JV, then eventually to Varsity Head Coach with the North Hills (Pittsburgh) Boys program. North Hills was 39-30 with Buzzard as Head Coach. He was named WPSLA coach of the year in 2006 when the team went 16-5. He also spent the 2007 season as an assistant with Carnegie Mellon University Mens program. Buzzard is also a certified personal trainer specializing in field and court performance training. He has presented on sport performance training at several conventions, including the 2008 US Lacrosse Convention. His services are utilized by many camps and combines, including the Midwest 99 recruiting combine and the 2008 NLL entry draft combine. Buzzard completed his MS in Instructional Leadership at Robert Morris University in 2007, and currently resides in Pittsburgh with his wife and 2 sons. “One of our primary goals this offseason going into the coaching search was to change the culture of the program. I think we found the perfect person in Coach Buzzard to help us do just that,” said team President Rob Musgrave. Buzzard will be charged with running the defense.

Sean O’Brien hails from Mountain Lakes, New Jersey were he won two state championships as a Laker. He attended Denison University finishing his career as a three time All American attackman and was named a captain his senior year. Following graduation, O’Brien was an assistant coach at Denison for one year under Michael Caravana. After returning to New Jersey O’Brien has volunteered at all levels of the Mountain Lakes lacrosse program. “Any time you can bring in someone who was an All American at the NCAA level you’re going to be upgrading your staff, but when that person also brings NCAA coaching experience, you’re thrilled,” said Musgrave. O’Brien has been named the top assistant coach and offensive coordinator of a unit that returns nine of the top ten scorers from last year.

Ryan Trude is a Western Pennsylvania product graduating from Mount Lebanon high school where he helped the team to three WPIAL championships and three second place finishes in the state final. After graduating from Mount Lebanon in 2003, he attended the College of Wooster. In 2004, Trude was apart of the second midfield line, aiding the team to the school’s first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. He then transferred to Colorado State and was a member of the 2006 National Championship Rams squad. Following graduation he remained in Colorado coaching at the high school level at Windsor and Fort Collins. In the fall of 2008, he was a volunteer coach with Colorado State. Trude is now working on his M.B.A at Point Park University. “Coach Trude has won at ever level as a player and as a coach. But it is his background as a member of Colorado State that most excites as us. He will be a valuable asset as we attempt to imitate an elite MCLA program on and off the field,” said Musgrave. Trude will be in charge of the man up and man down units.

• Inside Lacrosse and Lax.com released Kyle Harrison dodging instructional videos within 36 hours, both videos feature him discussing his basketball crossover split dodge and both feature his inability to finish, the most obvious miss is on the IL video inside of 10 yards followed by an exasperated gasp from Harrison
• GQ Magazine released their list of the Top 25 Douchiest colleges in the country, several high profile MCLA schools on the list, but is #12 a joke?

• Just as we were preparing to compliment Quint on an intelligent piece discussing fall ball tips (including one hour with your stick a day), he goes on his twitter account and posts the following gems: “Legs going to be ridiculously sore Tues – Squats, lunges, kettle cleans, power rack, leg ext & leg curls, calf raises & extensive ab work”
• Informational meeting last night, probably had 75 kids in total, perhaps we will need tryouts after all. We brought in the returning players first to discuss changes from last year then the incoming players came in to learn about team expectations, important dates, etc. (Video coverage in the works)
• The G20 Summit is going to mess up the Penguins preseason schedule, not thrilled

Biggest characters on the team Sean Regan and John Klein

This team went 22-2, finishing 7th in the country. Definitely want to watch these guys play.

They also have a kid named Tommy LaCrosse on the team. That’s no lie. He’s graduating this spring, committed to Penn State.

If you’re anything like one our of top returning d-poles, you packed on 15 pounds and are ready to wreck MCLA attackman. Can’t wait for practice less than two weeks away.

On Sunday we held our annual lacrosse sign up at the activities fair which is a meat market of freshmen picking and choosing their extracurricular organizations. Nothing screams legitimate group quite like the over weight white girl dancing with the Black Women’s Dance Workshop. (Their table was located across from our table. It was a long afternoon).

We received over 65 sign ups including freshmen, transfers, and players who hadn’t played last year.

Tomorrow we will host our first team meeting to discuss the fall and spring schedule, what happened this summer, expectations and the ever dreaded player dues. Every year a million kids sign up for lacrosse, half show up to the first meeting, half show up to the first fall practice, and half end up playing the entire spring season. (In science terms I believe that is commonly referred to as a half life).

Our hope for this season is a roster of 45. We will have a better idea how close we are to that goal after tomorrow night.

More rostered players means lower player dues and more importantly constant pressure to perform at practice, quite simply position battles.

The bottomline is that the program Pitt has been for the last 12 years is dead.

The cost of redemption is steep. But, we are moving in the right direction.
